A wonderful product of Lesvos, the oil of Mytilini, was named after its preservation. After the cheese had removed its moisture, it was maintained for an unbelievable time in clay-filled bottles filled with olive oil. It thus gained a wonderful, unique, spicy flavour and reduced its cruelty.
In Mytilini in the past, where there were a plethora of catches without the current means of maintenance (freezers), the world used to paste any fish, and after ripening in salt or brine, they cleaned the fish and stored them in olive oil. Various herbs such as garlic – pepper – pepper grains, etc., were added many times, which offered their own aromas and flavours.
Similar use is made of olive oil and the maintenance of local sausages such as smoked pork fat (lard) and various crabs.
If you want to preserve in your refrigerator your lemon juice or tomato sauce add a few drops of olive oil to the top of the bottle.
In the olive oil, we can also preserve various homemade pickles (carrot, cauliflower, mushrooms, celery, etc.), even eliminating their acidic flavour. In olive oil again we preserve the red hot peppers and after we put a piece of pepper and two tablespoons of olive oil in various dishes, such as beans, lentils, various reddish, we see how much it can bring out and take off their taste.
Of course, we should not omit the wonderful marinating of the meats in olive oil to which we have added various herbs of our choice.
Olive oil believed that it helped hair loss and also with olive oil passed the fragile hair. They considered it a panacea for cases of haemorrhoids. As a drinking medicine, they used it as a tonic for the body. They also believed that it was aphrodisiac and the proverb “eat oil and come in at night.” It was used as a lighting medium and olive oil grew and lights the chandeliers in the churches.
With olive oil, some very difficult stains can be eliminated from the soiled hands of cuttlefish, octopus, squid ink. Olive oil also cleans the pine resin-stained skin.
For any thorax or needle needles that have penetrated the skin, a few olive oil spreads bring them to the surface and it is easy to dispose of them with a tweezer.
Olive oil is also an excellent means of cleaning and polishing for silver and bronze utensils.
It is also the most suitable oil for sharpening the knives in stone. Finally, olive oil is the main ingredient for the production of good quality soaps.
Ways of maintenance
Keep olive oil away from sources of heat and bright light. Olive oil loves the shade and its ideal storage temperatures are from 15-18 degrees Celsius.
